Crowns and Bridges
Crowns (or ‘caps’) are used when teeth need to be strengthened, perhaps because they are heavily filled or fractured. A Crown completely covers the remaining natural tooth and can be made of gold or porcelain/ceramic (tooth coloured).
Bridges are used to replace missing teeth.
- Conventional Bridges involve crowning the teeth adjacent to the gap, with false teeth joined in between.
They are very strong but involve some preparation of the adjacent teeth (unless they are already crowned).
- Adhesive Bridges involve bonding the false tooth to the adjacent teeth. They are the least invasive option
requiring minimal or no preparation of the adjacent teeth, however they are not as strong.
The strongest alternative is an Implant.
